Liverpool Lead as Chelsea Drop Points

The 2026/27 Women’s Super League season opened with immediate contributions from new signings, three very different results for the promoted clubs and an early reminder that control means little without a finishing touch.

Liverpool lead the table on goal difference after a 4-0 win at Charlton Athletic. Defending champions Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur also scored three times, while Arsenal, London City Lionesses and Crystal Palace completed the opening group of winners.

Chelsea were the only side among the established title contenders to drop points, drawing 1-1 at home to Aston Villa despite dominating almost every attacking measure.

Chelsea control everything except the score

No opening-week result offered a clearer warning than Chelsea’s draw with Aston Villa.

Lauren James found the roof of the net after 11 minutes, but a second goal never followed. Chelsea finished with 34 shots, 57 touches in the opposition penalty area and 23 attempts from inside the box. They also struck the crossbar and had an Aggie Beever-Jones goal disallowed for offside.

Villa had only five touches in Chelsea’s area, yet left Stamford Bridge with a point after Noelle Maritz’s late effort ricocheted off Hannah Hampton and then Veerle Buurman. Akane Okuma’s goalkeeping helped keep Villa within reach before the equaliser.

One draw does not settle a title race, but the manner of it matters. Chelsea dropped points in similar performances last season and Sonia Bompastor again identified the need for greater ruthlessness.

With Melvine Malard unavailable and Mayra Ramírez still returning to fitness, limited attacking options also left the head coach with fewer ways to change the game.

City, Arsenal and Tottenham find different routes to victory

Manchester City had to wait until the 49th minute to break down Birmingham, whose goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley resisted the champions throughout the first half.

Once Mary Fowler opened the scoring, the difference in depth and quality became clearer. Khadija Shaw headed in twice from corners before Océane Hurtré rewarded Birmingham’s persistence with a stoppage-time goal.

It was a comfortable start to City’s title defence and a notable afternoon for Lauren Hemp on her 200th club appearance. Summer arrivals Beth Mead and Carlotta Wamser also made their debuts from the bench.

Arsenal’s win at Brighton was narrower but equally valuable. Four new signings started and 19-year-old Lisa Baum supplied the decisive moment, carrying the ball into the area and driving her shot off the underside of the crossbar after ten minutes.

Misa Rodríguez made important saves at the other end, while Chiamaka Nnadozie prevented Arsenal from extending their lead. The visitors were not clinical, but controlled the closing stages to win at a ground where they had dropped points on their previous two league visits.

Tottenham produced the most convincing attacking display among the likely challengers for the European places. Signe Gaupset opened the scoring against West Ham before Kirsty Hanson marked her Spurs debut with two goals, the second a precise curling finish.

West Ham started six of their ten summer signings and looked like a side still building its connections. Viviane Asseyi’s late goal was only a consolation in a 3-1 defeat.

WSL week 1: Liverpool replace last season’s slow start with an early statement

Liverpool went without a victory in their first 13 WSL games last season. This time they needed only eight minutes. Captain Grace Fisk scored twice at The Valley, first reacting after Sophie Whitehouse could only push Cornelia Kapocs’ delivery into danger and later curling into the top corner from Vivien Endemann’s cut-back.

Endemann then added a goal on her league debut before Kapocs converted a stoppage-time penalty.

The 4-0 scoreline puts Liverpool top after one round and gives them an immediate platform that was absent throughout the opening months of 2025/26. Charlton, by contrast, received a sharp introduction to the level required after promotion through the play-offs.

Crystal Palace enjoyed the best result among the three promoted sides. Lexi Lloyd-Smith punished Rion Ishikawa’s mistake and scored the only goal against Everton on her Palace debut. Everton hit the crossbar through Zara Kramžar and had two efforts cleared off the line during stoppage time, but Palace also created chances to extend their advantage.

The result is already significant for a club that won only twice during its previous WSL season in 2024/25. It does not prove Palace are safe, but it suggests this version of the team is better prepared to compete.

Birmingham’s 3-1 loss at Manchester City was less damaging than the scoreline might initially suggest. They defended with discipline for 49 minutes, retained some composure in possession and continued pursuing a goal after City took control.

Charlton were the only promoted team comprehensively beaten, leaving all three with very different reference points after their first weekend.

London City justify the pre-season interest

London City’s 2-1 win over Manchester United was the first indication that their expensive rebuild can translate into a coherent team.

Their high press disrupted United’s attempts to build from the back, while Daniëlle van de Donk controlled midfield and Estelle Cascarino and Rosa Kafaji repeatedly attacked the wide areas.

An own goal by Julia Zigiotti Olme gave London City the lead before Van de Donk’s clever backheel made it 2-0 late on. Simi Awujo scored in the tenth minute of added time, but United had offered too little before then. Phallon Tullis-Joyce’s saves were a major reason Eva Olid’s first competitive match as head coach remained close.

London City still showed moments of positional uncertainty, as expected from a heavily changed squad, but their intensity and individual quality were already visible. United now have to produce a response after one of the weekend’s least convincing performances.

What WSL week 1 told us

Liverpool hold the early lead, but the more meaningful conclusions sit beneath the table.

City still possess the depth to turn sustained pressure into a comfortable win. Arsenal’s new players can decide difficult away games. Tottenham have added proven league output, while London City appear ready to disrupt the established order.

Chelsea created more than enough to win and should not be judged solely on one draw. Their failure to convert that superiority, however, is the opening-weekend issue most likely to matter over a full title race.
