Dortmund consolidate second place after the comeback win against Heidenheim
Borussia Dortmund kept Bayern Munich ahead of the Bundesliga title race after fighting back to claim a dramatic 3-2 win over Heidenheim.
Dortmund had scored exactly three goals in each of their previous four league matches. They started slowly and struggled to establish themselves in the first 20 minutes. The only significant early effort came when Serhou Guirassy cut inside and unleashed a powerful shot which was well saved by Diant Ramaj.
Heidenheim briefly thought they had taken a surprising lead midway through the first half when Patrick Mainka slotted the ball into the net. The goal was disallowed after the defender was adjudged to have fouled Gregor Kobel as the goalkeeper attempted to claim the cross.
Kobel was then called onto the field again in the 26th minute, making a splendid save on Eren Dinkci from close range after a rebound that fell kindly to the winger. Dortmund responded with more pressure, when Nico Schlotterbeck wasted a headed chance from a corner before Guirassy saw an audacious chip hit the crossbar.
The breakthrough finally came for the home side when Ramaj missed another corner, dropping the ball to the feet of Waldemar Anton, who made no mistake and smashed it into the net from close range.
However, Dortmund’s lead was short-lived. On the stroke of half-time, Mathias Honsak raced down the left flank and delivered a teasing cross, which Julian Niehues converted at the second attempt to restore parity.
Dortmund emerged with renewed intent after the break and completed the comeback with two second-half goals.
The win keeps the pressure on leaders Bayern Munich and underlines Dortmund’s growing momentum as their Bundesliga title race picks up pace.
